4 reasons behind every ITEM purchase [With Examples]

The easiest way to sell any item is to figure out the USP of the product and differentiate it from the competition.

And the easiest way to do that is to answer:

Why will someone buy this product?

Initially, I had trouble answering that questions specifically.

But as I kept answering that question, I got better with time.

I know you don’t want to invest years like me to get better at answering this one question…

So I’m going to share the 4 most popular reasons behind the purchase of any item.

I learned the specifics of this from Travis Sago so the credit goes to him.

Let’s get into it.

Identity

Identity is how we think and feel about ourselves. People buy items that help them strengthen their identity.

Why did people buy this hairband? It made them look cute? It made them feel like a princess.

Time

People buy items that help them save time and make the process faster.

This irrigation system is automatic so I don’t have to spend my time.

Energy/Effort

People buy items that help them save energy and make the process easier.

This Labor-Saving Arm is helping us do the required task with less effort hence making the process easier.

Money

We all know this one. People buy items that can help them save money (or make money?).

It is washable and reusable so it is helping save some money.

There are more reasons behind every purchase but these 4 are the most popular in my experience.

You can use this framework when trying to write your copy too.

It’s hard to find a product that perfectly fits all the reasons but if you find such an item, it’s almost guaranteed to work.

And how do you remember this framework?

There is a reason I used the term ITEM instead of product in this guide.

ITEM stands for

  1. Identity
  2. Time
  3. Energy/Effort
  4. Money

Remember the framework and implement it.
