At the beginning of the year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? Because people have already spent all their money on BFCM and Christmas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s exactly when I scaled my store. But before I did\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We had a huge debate within the e-Com community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do you scale? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>90% of e-Com \u201cexperts\u201d say that you scale through ads. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet me manage your ads &#8211; I\u2019ll scale your store\u201d And I argued with them all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I said that the scale happens INSIDE the store. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what happens next&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I decided to focus on 3 things inside the store:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Hidden collections<\/li><li>Pricing + order manipulation<\/li><li>The force of +1<meta charset=\"utf-8\"><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>I highly doubt if you could find this information anywhere online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Including paid courses and expensive masterminds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s begin:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Hidden collections:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We found a way to create hidden collections inside the Shopify store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meaning: you can not access this collection from within the store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only if you have a direct link. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s important because in those collections is where we tested this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Pricing + order manipulation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a tricky one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We took all the data from the store and divided it into three parts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Best selling items.<\/li><li>Mid-selling items.<\/li><li>Worst selling items.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Now. We set up the collections to show 3 items per row. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And here\u2019s why that\u2019s crucial:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We priced all the items within 3 pricing categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Best selling items: $35-39<\/li><li>Mid-selling items: $47-67<\/li><li>Worst selling items: $89-97 <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s genius because people buy the best-selling items either way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But now they\u2019re also the cheapest items in the store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that wasn\u2019t enough. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also had to position the items in the store in a way that would be easier for the buyer to find \u201cthe best deal\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So this was the order of the items in each row: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Worst selling (W) &#8211; best selling (B) &#8211; mid selling (M) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each row. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>W-B-M<br>W-B-M <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We placed the best-selling items in the middle. Between two higher-priced items. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating the illusion that they\u2019re getting the best deal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They found the item they want &#8211; and what a coincidence! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also the cheapest one. But we went one step further:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You know how they say \u201cif everything\u2019s on sale &#8211; nothing\u2019s on sale\u201d? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A rookie mistake. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We only took the middle row of items and discounted them. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So instead of $97 &#8211; pay only $35. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further enhancing the illusion of the best deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><meta charset=\"utf-8\">But that wasn\u2019t enough\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because selling one item for $35-$39 (remember? Those are the best-selling ones)&#8230; Won\u2019t even put us at break-even after ad spend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So we had to increase our AOV (average order value). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what\u2019s the easiest way to do that? This:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>The force of +1<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Make the buyer buy one more item. Anyone knows how to do that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Newbies just offer a discount on a second item. \u201cBuy 2 get 10% off\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts use coupons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pros know there\u2019s a difference between giving % discounts and $ discounts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We took it to the next level:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We had a small banner at the top of EACH page on the store. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And this was the GENIUS move of ours. The banner said this: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBuy $70 &#8211; get $7 off <br>Buy $80 &#8211; get $12 off <br>Buy $150 &#8211; get $20 off\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But why was that so effective? Let\u2019s break it down:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The price of the items that people were buying was $35-39. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meaning &#8211; 2 items would put you at $78. So you get the $7 coupon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Great! But wait. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you add a couple more dollars you could get $12 off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s called \u201cselling money on discount\u201d. Add $2 to cart &#8211; get $5 off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Free $3!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the buyer would lock his mind on buying one more item. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But\u2026 we didn\u2019t have a $2 item. The cheapest was $35. Remember?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So we are forcing the +1 on a buyer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Increasing our AOV by a minimum of an extra $35. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smart. Right? But that wasn\u2019t all\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also knew that our VIP clients were buying for around $150 per order. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So we strategically placed a $150 coupon to not lose those customers to lower coupon deals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the real part that shocked all my e-Com colleagues? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We didn\u2019t touch the ads:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No new creatives. No new campaigns. No fancy tricks whatsoever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our highest revenue day was $67K. That day was a $10K profit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At some point we also got to the maximum allowed spend per day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cap was $35K\/day.
